What to actually do in your first three Deadlock matches: secure orbs in the first ten minutes, buy the cheap item, learn the heavy melee timing.
Deadlock Beginners Guide: Your First Three Matches
Three matches is enough to stop losing the laning phase, which is where most brand-new invites get thrown away. In the first ten minutes your whole income is troopers, and half of every trooper's bounty is an orb that you — or an enemy — has to shoot. Learn that rule, buy the cheap item instead of hoarding, and practise heavy melee on a crate, not on a face.
Valve's store page still lists the release date as "To be announced", calls the build an "EARLY DEVELOPMENT BUILD", and limits access to "friend invites via our playtesters". Two new heroes are still dropping every week as of 2026-10-03, so every number below carries the patch it came from.

Match 1: get to the lane and stop dying to the map

Ride the zipline down instead of walking. Your zipline boost starts on cooldown, so the first ride is slower than later ones — and if you ride it hot, drop early, because momentum carries you past where you meant to land. IGN's beginner walkthrough says the same: go to your lane immediately and do not overshoot.
Once you land, three jobs: stand behind your own troopers so the enemy wave walks into your damage, last-hit theirs so you get the instant cut, and shoot the orbs that come out. Ten minutes of that beats three fights.
Dash, slide and mantle are the real skill floor, not the shooting — as of the 2026-06-30 patch a dash jump covers 19 metres with a 0.25 second input window. Read the movement guide before match three, not after.
The first ten minutes: half your income is a floating orb
This is the number new players get wrong. Kill an enemy trooper and some souls land instantly; the rest fly out of the corpse as blue orbs. Shoot them and they are yours. Leave them and an enemy shoots them, and you have paid them for your last hit.
The official split, from the 2026-06-30 patch notes: 50% of a trooper's bounty sits in the deniable flying orb — Valve had it at 40% and raised it back to 50%. A trooper has to die within 45 metres for souls to drop at all, up from 35, and the minimum that drops as an unsecured orb was cut from a flat 150 to 50 + 5 per minute. Players put it more simply on r/DeadlockTheGame: half your laning souls come from the kill, half from securing the orb.
You drop unconfirmed souls when you die, above a threshold that scales with match time. Shoot the orbs before you disengage. A retreat that leaves five blue orbs on the ground is a gift to the enemy laner.
When an enemy last-hits one of your troopers, orange orbs come out and you can shoot those to steal their bounty. Walk past a lane fight and look at the ground.
Full rules — last-hit versus deny, the bounty curve, and the orb-plays-its-sound-but-no-souls-arrive problem from Valve's own forum — are in the souls economy guide.
Buy the cheap item, not the big one
New players hoard, staring at a 4000-soul item at the top of the shop with 1200 in the bank and losing ten minutes doing nothing with it. Valve added a Popular Items tab with City Never Sleeps because the shop now narrows to what players actually buy and when, a fine default with no opinion yet. Buy down the list, buy cheap, buy the moment you can afford it.
The investment thresholds make the case on their own. As of the 2026-05-22 patch the weapon, vitality and spirit lines all break at 4.8k / 6.4k / 8k / 11.2k / 16k souls. A player crossing three of those in the first fifteen minutes beats a player sitting on 16k with nothing, and the thresholds do not care what your items were called.
Heavy melee: practise it on crates, not on heroes
Heavy melee decides trades, escapes and crate openings, and it is the one thing you can practise alone. The map is full of free targets: ordinary crates sometimes drop bonus souls, and the tougher ones — Tough Crates, added with City Never Sleeps — need a heavy melee to break open at all. The pedestals older guides call Golden Statues were revamped in the same patch; Valve now calls them Buff Containers, and they also grant permanent Spirit Resist, Bullet Resist, Ability Range and Move Speed, and the HUD shows what is inside.
Walk past the next lane fight and break a crate instead. Same animation, zero consequences.
Official source: City Never Sleeps — Tough Crates "require a Heavy Melee to break open"; Buff Containers are the "revamped golden statues" and now also grant Spirit Resist, Bullet Resist, Ability Range and Move Speed (2026-09-29).
What to skip for three matches
- Ranked. You cannot queue it yet. Ranked Mode needs 60 Standard wins plus three heroes you have each won 15 games with (Valve's 2026-07-30 post). The ranked page has the conditions.
- The Midboss. Valve's notes list it at 13,000 HP with a 3,000-soul bounty, spawning from the start of the match (2026-05-22 patch). Three people who cannot aim yet should not open it.
- Other lanes. The best farming advice in this Steam discussion is the least glamorous: cross-map farming is wasted travel unless you can chain camps with no dead time.
- Saving for a big item. Covered above, badly.
- Chasing kills. Early deaths are cheap — the respawn ramp runs 8 to 35 seconds between minute 5 and minute 20 (2026-06-30 patch). Feeds cost you the match.
Two of your three games should be Street Brawl
To learn the shooting instead of the economy, queue Street Brawl: 4v4, best of five, and Valve's rule is blunt — "each round players start with equal resources. No farming." You draft three items per round, so there is no laning to lose. As of 2026-09-29 it also hands you a Corrupted item after the round-five draft. Full rules in the Street Brawl guide.
Match three: this is where you start rotating
Around the ten-minute mark the laning phase ends: you stop sharing souls automatically with teammates and every trooper bounty has to be shot for. Group up, push with your wave, and clear the neutral camps on the way.
The map has been rebuilt since most older guides were written. City Never Sleeps split four Districts — Theater, Chinatown, Haunted Lot and Plaza — off the main streets, and the neutral creatures are now called Haunts. The four-lane layouts in older guides are wrong; read the Haunt reference and the District map first.
Do not try to win match three. Reach minute 20 with items bought, a lane that is not feeding, and one ability you can use without thinking. How matches actually end covers the objective chain.
How much of this survives the next patch
Less than you would like. Valve's news feed lists six balance patches between 2026-07-01 and 2026-09-16 alone, and the City Never Sleeps announcement explicitly lists Midboss, Guardians and Walkers, and hero remodels as still not done. The roster moves too: 38 heroes were confirmed before City Never Sleeps, six more release two per week, and Rat King went live on 2026-10-02.
Treat the dates above as dates. Use the City Never Sleeps breakdown and the roster page for what is current, and read how to read the meta yourself rather than a tier list that dies at the next hotfix.
FAQ
I died six times in my first match. Is the game broken?
No. Respawns run 8 to 35 seconds between minute 5 and minute 20, so dying early costs positioning, not the run. What it costs is the unconfirmed souls you left behind.
Which hero should I pick first?
Standard Mode has no party-size or skill-spread restrictions, and Valve says the matchmaker adjusts your match to your experience with a given hero. Pick from the current roster by what you want the hero to do, not by a win-rate table.
Should I turn on Auto Fire and Auto Mantle?
If you are missing shots because the genre is new to you, yes — City Never Sleeps added Auto Move, Auto Mantle and Auto Fire under dedicated accessibility settings.
Why do I earn less than the ally next to me?
Because a laning-phase trooper kill shares some souls automatically with nearby teammates, and the rest drops as an orb only the shooter gets. After ten minutes even that share stops.
