How to Get Deadlock Invite in 2026 (Still Invite-Only)

Deadlock has no public sign-up, no demo and no open queue — the only way in is a Steam friend who already has access sending you the playtest invite from inside the game. If you do not have that friend, two community routes work right now: the invite megathread on r/DeadlockTheGame and the #deadlock-invite-giveaway channel on the community Discord. That is the whole mechanic, and it has not changed after the City Never Sleeps update.

What you need to know before you start:

  • Friendship first. Invites are only possible between Steam friends. You cannot be invited by a stranger until the friend request is accepted.
  • There is no invite code or key. The "Deadlock invite code" search term has no answer at all — the invite is an account-to-account Steam grant, nothing you can type in.
  • Limited Steam accounts cannot participate. Accounts that have never spent at least $5 are locked out of the playtest entirely.
  • Valve has published no open date. The store page release date is still "To be announced" and the game still cannot be purchased.

What the Steam store page actually says

I pulled the store page myself on 2026-10-04, five days after City Never Sleeps shipped. The wording is unchanged:

LIMITED ACCESS — "Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters."

The same block opens with "EARLY DEVELOPMENT BUILD — Deadlock is still in early development stages with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay."

Official source: Deadlock on Steam — store page

Store page field What it shows (checked 2026-10-04)
Release date To be announced
Purchase "This game is not yet available on Steam" — no price, no buy button
Playtest sign-up None. No "join the playtest" button exists on the page
Demo None
Wishlist "Interested? Add to your wishlist and get notified when it becomes available"
System requirements All TBD apart from "Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system"
Reviews "No user reviews"

Two corrections that matter, because most guides floating around still repeat them:

  1. Deadlock is not confirmed free to play. "Free to Play" appears on the store page only as a user-defined tag. There is no price and the game cannot be bought; treat pricing as unannounced.
  2. Wishlisting is not a queue. Adding it to your wishlist only notifies you when it becomes available. It does not enter you into the playtest.

Valve's own City Never Sleeps notes list Midboss, Guardians and Walkers, and hero remodels as still unfinished, with larger item redesigns and alternate modes called speculative. That is Valve explaining why the gate is shut — it is not a queue you failed to get into.

The three routes that get you in

Route 1: A Steam friend who already has access

The cleanest path and usually the fastest. The long-running public invite thread on the game's own Steam community hub spells the mechanics out: add them on Steam first (mandatory, because "Deadlock does not allow invites unless we are friends"), they send the invite from the in-game menu, and you get a Steam notification plus an email when it lands. Once you accept, the game appears in your library. The sender's own step-by-step walkthrough is on how to invite friends to the Deadlock playtest.

Route 2: The r/DeadlockTheGame invite megathread

Post your Steam friend details in the megathread and wait for an access holder to add you. The thread's own note sets the expectation:

"Deadlock invites are serviced entirely within the steam app. It can take around 20minutes to 3 hours for the invitation to reach you."

Route 3: The Discord #deadlock-invite-giveaway channel

The subreddit moderators point people who have no luck at the megathread to one place: "If you need a Deadlock invite, please go to the Invite Megathread or the #deadlock-invite-giveaway channel on our Community Discord." Do not join from a link a stranger posts — reach the server through the "Find Community Groups" button on the Deadlock store page, because lookalike servers are a known scam route.

Route 4: The public invite threads on the Steam community hub

Understated and still busy. The game's own Steam discussions hub carries long-running "free invite" threads with hundreds of replies. Inviters there also hit Steam's friend-list cap, which blocks new invites until someone is removed — often why one goes quiet.

Route You need Typical wait Best for
Steam friend with access One accepted friend request 10 minutes to 2 days Anyone with one player contact
Reddit invite megathread A Steam profile people can add Roughly 20 minutes to 3 hours Cold approach, most reliable public route
Discord invite channel Discord account, no Steam sharing required Varies by channel When the megathread is slow
Steam hub invite threads Patience Varies Last resort when the others stall

The $5 limited-account blocker

Check your account before you post anywhere

Steam accounts that have never spent at least $5 (wallet funds or purchases) are limited accounts. Limited accounts cannot send friend requests and cannot participate in the Deadlock playtest, even when they are friends with someone who has access.

This is the failure that wastes the most hours: you send the friend request, it is accepted, the invite is sent, and then nothing ever arrives. On a fresh account that never spent anything, the invite cannot complete. Adding at least $5 to your Steam wallet, or buying any item, is what lifts the restriction.

When the invite does not show up

Symptom Most likely cause Do this
Friend request sent, never accepted Inviter is offline or their list is full Wait, or pick another person; do not spam requests
Accepted, no invite after an hour Inside the normal 20 min – 3 h window Leave Steam notifications and email on, stay near the client
Still nothing after 24 hours Inviter's list capped, or your account is limited Check your wallet total first, then ask for a second sender
Invite arrived, game not in library You accepted the friend request but not the playtest invite Check Steam's notification bell and the email on file
Invite vanished Steam sessions reset Re-request; do not keep the old thread open
Nothing weeks later Genuinely stalled Megathread threads contain players stuck for a month; move to a second route

Do not buy invites

Selling access is not a route

There is no legitimate invite market. Any "Deadlock invite code for sale" listing is either a scam, an account trader using your login, or a broker reselling access Valve never authorised. The invite itself is free, delivered inside Steam, and never requires clicking an external link or handing over your Steam credentials.

Also ignore the recurring claim that Valve lifted the NDA or opened access after a big patch. No such announcement exists, and the store page still says access is limited to friend invites — PC Gamer made the same point after City Never Sleeps: "Valve hasn't removed the need for an invite to play Deadlock."

What to do the moment you are in

You will have roughly a 30-minute match to survive before anything clicks, so set expectations first. What is Deadlock, and why it is not a shooter explains the six-versus-six structure, and your first three matches covers laning without pretending the game is beginner-friendly. The current roster and roles are on the hero roster page, and because six heroes stay vote-locked through October 2026, the new hero release schedule explains why friends' lobbies keep changing. Still deciding whether to spend the time? The 2026 verdict page is honest about the trade-offs.

FAQ

Do I need an invite code for Deadlock? No. Codes and keys do not exist for this playtest. The invite is sent from inside the game by someone who already has access, and it arrives through Steam only.

How long does a Deadlock invite take? The Reddit megathread puts it at roughly 20 minutes to 3 hours inside the Steam app. Player invite threads on the Steam community hub quote a wider 10 minutes to 2 days. Treat anything inside a few hours as normal and a missing invite as suspicious after a day.

Is Deadlock still invite-only after City Never Sleeps? Yes. The update landed on 2026-09-29 and the store page still limits access to friend invites via playtesters. Valve has not announced an open beta.

Can I play on Steam Deck or Linux? Valve lists Windows only. Steam Deck and Linux players run it through unofficial compatibility layers, which Valve has never confirmed.

My friend says they sent it and nothing arrived. What now? Check whether their Steam account is limited (under $5 spent), whether their friend list is full, and whether you accepted the playtest invite and not just the friend request. Then use a second route instead of waiting.
