Is Deadlock Free? Price and Release Date Status
Deadlock costs nothing today, but you also cannot buy it. The Steam store page carries no price and no purchase button, the app record returns is_free: false with an empty package list, and the release date still reads To be announced. Playing right now requires a friend invite from an existing playtester, and nothing about launch pricing has ever been published.
- Price right now: none listed, nothing purchasable, no DLC, no founder pack.
- Access: invite-only, free for the person who receives the invite.
- Release date: To be announced on the store page, checked October 10, 2026.
- Launch price: never announced by Valve. The Free to Play label on the store page is a user tag, not a promise.

What the Steam store page says right now
I pulled both the store page and Valve's app record on October 10, 2026, eleven days after the City Never Sleeps update. Every field that would tell you what Deadlock costs or when it arrives is either empty or explicitly unannounced:
| Store page field | Value checked October 10, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Purchase option | "This game is not yet available on Steam" — no price, no buy button |
API is_free |
false, with package_groups: [] (no purchasable packages exist) |
| Release Date | To be announced (coming_soon: true) |
| Access | "Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters" |
| Reviews | No user reviews |
| System requirements | OS, processor, graphics and sound card all read TBD apart from "Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system" |
| Platforms | Windows yes, Mac no, Linux no |
| Wishlist | "Interested? Add to your wishlist and get notified when it becomes available." |

The description block still opens the way it did a year ago: "EARLY DEVELOPMENT BUILD — Deadlock is still in early development stages with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay," followed by "LIMITED ACCESS." That wording is the whole answer in miniature: unfinished, gated, unpriced.
Why the Free to Play tag is not a price
The store page does show Free to Play — but it sits under the heading "Popular user-defined tags for this product," next to Early Access, Horror and Cute. Anyone on Steam can vote a tag onto a page. It is community labeling, not a line item in Valve's billing system, and the app record agrees: is_free is false, and there is no package to add to a cart.
Media repeat the tag as fact. TechTimes wrote on September 30, 2026 that "Deadlock is free to play and has never charged players anything" — true in the sense that nobody has ever been charged, but that is a statement about the past, not a published price. No official page states what Deadlock will cost at launch or after it.
"Free to Play" on this page is a user-defined tag. Valve has published no launch price in either direction — not free, not paid. Until the store page shows a real number, any price you see quoted (including paid alpha invites sold by third parties) is someone else's invention, and the invite guide explains why those listings are scams.
What Deadlock actually costs you today
Money, no. Time and dependencies, yes. Three real costs sit between you and a match:
- You need a human invite. There is no sign-up queue, no demo, no open beta. Someone who already has access sends the playtest invite from inside the game, and the sender's side of that flow is covered in how to invite friends to Deadlock.
- Your Steam account must not be limited. Accounts that have never spent at least $5 cannot participate in the playtest at all, even with a valid invite in hand. Steam's limited-account help page defines the restriction.
- The build changes under you. Valve's own notice says temporary art and experimental gameplay. A guide written in September can be wrong in October — what is Deadlock covers the shape of the game, but expect the details to move with each patch.
Spend nothing, wishlist the page for the launch notification, and find one player inside the game. Waiting costs zero dollars, zero pre-orders and zero commitments, which is also why the 2026 worth-playing verdict comes out the way it does.
Release date status: still To be announced
There is no launch date, no open beta date and no early access window on any official channel. The store page field has read To be announced since the playtest began, and Valve's September 29 announcement used its closing section to list work it has not done yet rather than to promise a date:
Official source: City Never Sleeps, Valve, September 29, 2026 — Valve wrote that after the previous content drops it "felt that there was still a good amount of work we wanted to do on the core game itself," naming Midboss, Guardians and Walkers among things it considers important but has not gotten to yet, with the official update page carrying the same patch.
Press read that post the same week and reached the same conclusion. PC Gamer's September 30, 2026 headline was that Valve says Deadlock is still too unfinished to release publicly. GamingOnLinux, on October 1, 2026, called the update a step toward completeness while the game remains a while away from a public release. Earlier in the year, G FUEL reported in April 2026 that Valve had confirmed no open beta was planned in the near future, relaying a developer's remarks from the community Discord — that one is media sourcing, not a Valve post, so treat it as direction rather than a commitment.
| Milestone | Status on October 10, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Public release date | Not announced — "To be announced" |
| Open beta | Not announced; press reported no near-term plan as of April 2026 |
| Console or Mac version | Never announced; the app record lists Windows only |
| Price at launch | Never published |
| What is actually shipping | New heroes every Tuesday and Friday: Rat King on October 2, Baba on October 6, Solomon on October 9 |
The pattern of 2026 is steady content without a date: ranked play landed in July, City Never Sleeps landed September 29, and heroes keep arriving on the twice-weekly vote schedule. None of it comes with a launch notice, and anyone selling you a date is guessing. The City Never Sleeps breakdown lists what changed and what Valve still owes the game.
What free will mean when it launches
Two honest unknowns sit at the end of this page. First, Valve has never said whether the finished game will be free to play, paid, or free with cosmetics — the closest thing to evidence is the community tag and media commentary, neither of which binds the company. Second, even if it launches free, the current invite system says nothing about launch access: playtest invites, wishlist notifications and an open release are three different mechanics, and only the middle one exists for you today.
What you can control now: keep the wishlist entry (it is a notification, not a queue position), keep one invite contact alive, and read your first matches guide so the first match after you get in is not wasted.
FAQ
Is Deadlock free to play?
Right now the question barely applies. Nothing on Steam can be bought: no price, no package, is_free: false. The Free to Play label is a user-defined tag. Call it "free but closed" until Valve publishes an actual price.
Do I have to pay for a Deadlock invite? No. Invites are sent for free from inside Steam by players who already have access. Any paid invite code, key or account listing is a scam or an account trade. The one money requirement is Steam's own $5 limited-account rule, which blocks fresh accounts from participating.
When is the Deadlock release date? To be announced, unchanged as of October 10, 2026. Valve's own September 29 post listed unfinished core work instead of a date, and press covering it that week described the game as still too unfinished to release publicly.
Will Deadlock be free when it comes out? Nobody knows. Valve has published no launch price, no monetization plan and no cosmetics store policy. Treat "free at launch" as an expectation carried by the community tag, not as a fact you can quote.
Can I buy Deadlock early access? There is no purchase option, no founder pack and no paid tier on the store page. The only way into the current build is a friend invite, which is free — the invite guide lists the routes that work.
Does the wishlist get me in? No. It only notifies you when the game becomes available. It does not enter you into the playtest and it does not improve your position for launch.
